tidbits Simply Fabulous Fabulously Simple

tibbits ideas and information for moms

When one of our clients asked us to help them make a mommy blogger site (http://momtidbits.com), we jumped at the opportunity. Our only requirement was that they prepared a months worth of content ahead of the site launch date. If you want anyone to find your website, you must have content. Well the ladies came thru and the site has been moving up the search engine ladder and TopMommyBlogs lists ever since.

The site features:

  • a daily tidbit: A post about just about anytime that is interesting to women everywhere (wedding planning, making jam, birthdays, packing ideas, and tons of other interesting morsels.
  • giveaways: the site has a weekly giveaway to readers who share socially and get involved in the website.  They have given away Cupcake Sprinkles, Miniemergency Kits, Culinarium stuff, etc.
  • fabulous finds: great products used by moms for babies, home, fashion, etc.

For a site that is a little over a year old it has enormous amout of great content and ideas.  Our job was to help them organize the content:

  • To make it easy for readers to find the content easily and quickly.
  • To help the editors disseminate the content via automatic emails and social media.

Small Local Businesses Need Websites Too

Three women searching for local products and services onlineIn 1995 only 1 in 10 Americans had internet access. Five years later that number was up to 5 in 10. Today there are over 300 million people in the United States, and over 240 million of them are online. That’s nearly 80%, and it’s still rising every year. When it comes to teenagers, the number is over 95%.

Today over 75% of U.S. households use the internet as an information source when shopping locally for products and services. That is, when they want to buy something locally, or find a local service whether it’s a hair salon, or a restaurant, or a contractor, they search online for that person.

60% use the internet as their ONLY source of information as they’ve ditched the Yellow Pages. Think on that if you’ve spent money for a Yellow Pages ad recently. 60% of American households don’t even let that book in their door anymore. It goes from the stoop to the trash (or probably the recycling).

Over half of Americans surveyed say they “shop online, purchase offline”. That is that even though they look for products and services on the internet, they still prefer to find what they want and then call, or physically go to a store to purchase it. Just because they’re searching online, doesn’t mean they aren’t interested in your business.

In fact nearly 90% of people searching for local products and services follow up their searching with “offline” contact with the actual business.(that is a phone call, an email, physically going to the location.)

So for any particular age group from teenagers to adults, the chances they have internet access these days is anywhere from 80 to 95%. The vast majority of those people use the internet to find local services and products, and even a supermajority ONLY use the internet to find your business. And if they find your business and you offer what they want, over 90% of them will follow up with you in some way, even if that means just stopping by.

Also 90% of the searching is done directly through search engines, and the majority of those people don’t search past the first page of search results, and barely any past the third page of results. Those people are likely to look at no more than 3 to 5 websites, and are most likely to contact and follow up with the one which looks the most professional, and is the best designed, and conveys the right information.

Lastly, even if your business runs on referrals, the best place for those these days are on social networks tied into your website. Over half of all Americans are on Facebook, and a quarter of them are over the age of 45. It’s not just for kids. In fact 60% of Facebook users are over the age of 25. Referrals for products and services via links in Facebook are trusted by nearly 80% of users (versus trust levels for an advertisement that are under 20%).

Anyone know a good plumber? Where do you get your kids hair cut? Is there a decent Ethiopian restaurant in town? Questions asked on Facebook, that are answered with a link to a local business.

So you tell me. Does your small local business need a good website and social media presence?

PubClub Launches New Website Design

publicity club of new england

The Publicity Club of New England launched their new website this Tuesday to coincide with their annual Bell Ringer Awards dinner. Since 1969, the Publicity Club of New England’s Bell Ringer Awards have been a symbol of outstanding achievement for New England public relations and communications professionals.

This year we began working with the PubClub a few months back to completely redesign, wireframe, and build out a new custom theme and design into their existing site, to seamlessly launch and update their website to be unveiled at the awards ceremony.

We’re glad it went off without a hitch, and we’re happy to be continuing our relationship with the Publicity Club of New England for another year.

Cook Angel for When We Need Help With Dinner

cook angel whats for dinner

One of our newer customers Cook Angel is doing well. Cook Angel is the creation of Tony Rosenfeld, the head chef over at b.good (another member of our clientele) and the author of multiple cookbooks, including the recently released Sear Sauce and Serve: Mastering High Heat High Flavor Cooking. Tony wanted a site where someone could submit a picture or two of what they had in their fridge, or even just a description, and then ask for his help on what to cook. Then he or a guest chef, would take those ingredients and provide a fun and tasty recipe that the submitter could make.

It’s pretty fun, and Tony has already posted a number of different really great recipes based on just what people have. Give it a try if you can’t figure out what to cook. Take a picture even with your phone and email it in!

It’s one of the fun things being in the web design industry, that we get to work with such a variety of projects and companies. Even within certain industries, like food with Cook Angel or our other oRestaurantDesign websites focusing on restaurants, everyone is different. Even if it’s subtle.

Do YOU have an idea for a website? Some idea that you have thought “Man that’d be so cool if there was a website that….”. Well if you have and you don’t know how to make it a reality, it’s simple. The first step is to talk to us. We can help you flesh out your idea, and turn it into a web reality. Don’t sit back and wait for someone else to make your idea a reality and profit off of it. You should take that first step, and contact us today about whatever your brilliant idea is.

Because a new website doesn’t just have to be for an established company. It can be a whole new business, just for you.

June Website Design Deals!

Woman Running On a Beach. Summer Deals from OrcaPackSummer is here, and we’re offering some great deals for new customer signups.

Some people might be thinking to themselves that the economy is iffy, and maybe this isn’t the time to update or upgrade their web presence. Wrong. Perfect time. You don’t want to idle down your marketing when the economy is bad. You want to ratchet it up. I don’t care if you’re a restaurant, or a widget manufacturer, you need sales, and if you reduce your marketing you’re going to reduce your sales.

…and if the economy isn’t doing great, then your sales might already be dipping, or have dipped. Why make them dip more?

Well it’s the start of Summer. Kids are finishing up school, the pools are opening up, vacations are starting… But you can use this time to get your website up to speed. You can get a new website up, and get working on your new online marketing plan this summer, and by the time September rolls around you’ll be in full steam.

So this summer we’re offering some radical deals. Custom designed websites, hosting, support, a detailed internet marketing plan that holds your hand and tells you what to do each day and week, all wrapped up for your business at a low monthly cost, rather than a big hit to your bottom line. Normally these services we offer from $250 a month and up. Sometimes $500, or even thousands a month depending on what the customer wants.

For this June? Our base price if you sign up for 12 months is $149.  That’s only $1788 spread across a whole year. But if you pay up front all of it? We’ll give you an ADDITIONAL 10% off.

$1610 as the annual line item for your website and online marketing. A custom design, hosting, support and all the little details taken care of including your email, PLUS a detailed internet marketing plan to follow for your business to teach you HOW to use your website. Because the whole thing is in a Content Management System where YOU can change your content at any time, whenever you want, without needing to go through us or anyone.

Normally also we have a 12 month commitment. You sign up, and you need to commit for 12 months. This June though? No commitment. Cancel anytime.

Seriously, if you don’t have a website for your company, or it’s a bad one and you don’t know what you’re doing, or you’re using some crappy template service and can’t make it work right, then RIGHT NOW is the time to drop us a line and sign up. Call us, email us, and we can get working for you. We can have a brand new website up for you within days, and get you on track to having your website be a marketing asset for your company before September.

So don’t wait, cause this deal won’t last forever, but more importantly because it’s time, right now, to get your business’ online marketing in gear. The health of your company might depend on it.

New OrcaPack Website!

Screenshot of the new OrcaPack home pageWe’ve launched our newest iteration of the OrcaPack website today!

I don’t know how many websites we’ve had off the top of my head since 2002. At least an update every year. Starting back with our first website which focused on our initial business, which was a specific web product called Collab. I’m going to have to dig into some of my old archive files and see if I can pull that one out. The oldest I have readily available to me is from 2005.

That was back when our brand was the white name on black. We were already focusing on Restaurants even back then, with what we called Table Service. It eventually grew into oRestaurantDesign and now has it’s own website!

Of course it wasn’t that long after THIS website that we went through a brief rebranding period where we changed our name to Web Solutions Builder. I don’t even remember the reasons why now, but in 2006 we rebranded and the website changed again.

Nothing is forever though, and by 2007 we changed back to OrcaPack, and further downplayed our name, which originally was much more tied to our Collab product than anything.

Actually I still kind of like the 2007 design. Nice reflections, which were the style at the time. Clean design that now is a fairly common way to go.

But I insisted we needed a cartoon Killer Whale. Let’s embrace the Orca! So in late 2009 “Orcy” was born. Yeah it’s a horrible name, but what should we call him? Steve?

After a few more revisions and designs we moved and early 2010 saw the first stage of Orcy in our branding.

Now with our new design Orcy stays right up there, a friendly symbol of murderous whaley death that is our…

Wait no…

See Killer Whales work together, cooperatively to get things done, that a single one can’t do. We have some cool stories about it.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy the new design, and new site, and our new focus on providing great ongoing service to our current and future customers!
